The City of Music Paris, France

Opened in 1995, the Cité de la Musique was designed by architect Christian de Portzamparc. He envisioned it as a “dream city,” a space inviting movement, open to the city, a place to meet.

The Cité de la Musique was inaugurated in January 1995, created to bring together the Paris Conservatory and its instrument museum, which were cramped in their premises on rue de Madrid, along with concert and rehearsal spaces to host public events under optimal conditions.
The original plan was to unite music education and dissemination. Architect Christian de Portzamparc was selected to realize the project.
He was awarded the Pritzker Prize, the architectural equivalent of the Nobel Prize, in 1994, after a decade dedicated to the building.
